Bad breath problem - most of us experiences having bad breath problem particularly upon waking up in the morning. When you are awake, the movement of the cheek and the tongue helps remove food debris within the mouth and this can be easily cleared away by the saliva. However, when you are asleep, the cheek and the tongue rarely move and there is a minimal flow of saliva. Because of this, food particles within the mount are stuck thus causing bacteria to build up and this releases a foul smell. But you can easily get rid of this by simply brushing your teeth or rinsing your mouth with water.
Temporary or Persistent?
In adults, a bad breath problem can be temporary or persistent. Consumption of alcohol and smoking can cause bad breath, as well as eating certain foods like garlic, onion, spicy foods, radish and smoked foods. This can be due to the products contained in these foods that cause it to release a foul smell. Then again, this can easily be remedied by simply brushing your teeth. However, if your bad breath persists, then this can be a sign that you are experiencing gum disease. A gum disease does not present any painful symptoms and so it cannot be identified easily. Poor oral hygiene, chest problems like bronchitis and certain medicines can all cause bad breath in adults. Temporary bad breath can be solved by avoiding certain foods or maintaining proper oral hygiene. However, if your bad breath is persistent, then it would be best to consult your physician or your dentist for help.
Bad Breath and Dry Mouth…
A bad breath problem in children and adolescents can be very common as well. Children who breathe through their mouth while sleeping might end up having bad breath upon waking up. This bad breath condition can be due to the open mouth where the saliva dries up and being unable to wash out food debris inside the mouth. Take note that dry mouth can promote bacterial growth, thus causing bad breath in children. Aside from that, children who are experiencing allergies or cold or those with sinus infection can also experience having bad breath.

Another cause of a bad breath problem in children is the entry of foreign objects into their nose. Enlarged tonsils, inflamed gums and cavities are some of the major causes of bad breath in children as well. To avoid this, proper brushing, regular flossing and tongue scrapping is necessary. However, if the problem is due to an infection, then it would be best to treat the infection to get rid of the bad breath.
First Defense…
Take note that your first defense against a bad breath problem is maintaining proper oral hygiene and visiting a dentist at least twice a year for regular cleaning. If the bad breath is due to certain medical conditions, then it would be best to consult your physician immediately for the proper treatment of the condition in order to get rid of the bad breath.
